If you know how to do a front flip, a backflip is the next step. But keep in mind, if you don’t know how to do it correctly, you may get hurt. Before we dive into the process of backflips, we should be sure that safety is the top priority. We recommend starting on a trampoline. First, make sure your trampoline is in good shape, and it’s even better if it has the netting around it. It is safer to work while somebody is there to spot you and give you tips. Get warmed up on your trampoline. You can do this by jumping and thinking about the high point you want to rotate at. Also, to prevent an accident, you must take small steps unless you know you can jump pretty high. First, on a trampoline, try a back drop while tucking and maintaining control throughout all of these steps. Next, try an over-the-shoulder handspring, a back handspring (repeat until you get it down), and then try a backflip. Taking it in smaller segments helps build confidence, and once you get those steps down, try doing it with little to no bounce. Take your time on all of these steps, and there you are. You have officially learned how to do a backflip, and if you want to try on the ground, go for it, but with a spotter. Check out the accompanying video tutorials to learn how to do a backflip on a trampoline and on the ground.
