Homecoming Week is in full swing! It has been a fun week of dressing up and showing school spirit. On Monday, we showed off our red, white, and blue. Tuesday, we dressed like we lived in Hawaii. Wednesday, we dressed like soccer moms and BBQ Dads. Today (Thursday), we rolled out of bed and arrived at school in our pajamas. Friday is the class color day. Seniors will wear purple, juniors black, sophomores white, and freshmen grey. Tonight, after the volleyball game (around 8:00), there will be a hotdog and s’mores roast by the football field, and the student council will be showing the cinematic masterpiece Cars. Ka-chow!
Friday is a big day for HOCO. During 2nd period on the football field, the “Passing the Torch” ceremony takes place. This is where seniors line up at one end of the field and kindergarteners line up at the other. They meet in the middle, and each member of the class of 2026 hands a note of encouragement and a t-shirt to each member of the class of 2038. It’s cute, emotional, and parents are invited to attend. However, by 6th period the seniors will be ready for blood as they claim victory in the CLASS WARS! The freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will compete in the gym for supremacy. The competitions? The Fast & Furious Relay–four students from each class have to dress up in football gear and ride a scooter. Surfin’ USA–students lie side-by-side on the ground and roll, moving a classmate on a pool raft over them. Magic Carpet Ride–musical chairs, but with carpet squares. There’s also spiderball and tug-o-war. Of course, the seniors are certain to dominate. Later, there’s the parade at 3:30 and the football game at 7:00. This year’s match-up promises to be a good one: the 3-0 Titans versus 3-0 GCMS.
Then, get ready to shake that thang because Saturday’s dance is from 8-11 in the gym, with coronation at 9:00. This year’s dance will feature a photo booth and, for the first time ever, concessions at our new concession stand. And, you can’t miss the Grand March at the dance. The Grand March is a tradition that started at Gridley High School and has continued for nearly 100 years. It happens right after the coronation. Everyone grabs a partner, and you lead each other through a cool, organized dance. So, show some school spirit and enjoy HOCO week!
