Most of you probably know what a pie is, a delicious dessert that consists of a crust and whatever filling is put into it. But have you ever made one? In this article is a recipe for Sweet Potato Pie, a personal favorite of mine, and a tradition my mom has made for every Thanksgiving.
First, we need to start with the ingredients list:
- 3 Sweet Potatoes
- ½ Cup Softened Butter
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
- ½ Cup Evaporated Milk
- 2 Large Beaten Eggs
- 2 Tsp Vanilla Extract.
- Unbaked Pie Crust (Graham Cracker Crust is fine too.)
Once you have your ingredients gathered, time for the first steps.
- Bake Sweet Potatoes
Make sure to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Bake the potatoes on a baking pan for 40-50 minutes to get your potatoes soft and easy to peel. Once that’s done, put them into a large bowl or keep them on the pan.
- Peel The Potatoes
Be careful not to smush the potatoes, and peel gently. Use your fingernails to get under the skin if needed. Now move them to a bowl if you haven’t already.
- Make The Filling
Once the potatoes are peeled, drop your butter into the bowl and mash thoroughly until you see none of the butter. Now add your sugar and mix well into the potatoes. Finally, you can add the milk, vanilla extract, and eggs, and mix one more time to get all of the ingredients well combined.
- Bake Your Pie
Add the filling to your pie crust and make sure to distribute the filling all over the crust. Bake for about an hour at 350 degrees. Your filling should come out clean when you test it with a utensil or toothpick; you may have to keep it in the oven for a bit longer if it’s still not ready. Once it’s done, take it out of the oven and set it to cool for a few hours. It’s important not to put it in the fridge too soon, or else bacteria might start to form.
Finally, all that’s left is to serve the pie! You can eat it with friends or family, or just keep it in the fridge for safekeeping. Don’t forget to top it with whipped cream if you want. If you do end up using this recipe, I hope you enjoyed making it as much as I did. Check out my video below showing the process I went through to bake my very own pie.
