Sometimes, when something is so ridiculously overused, it unironically becomes funny. Although, it is unclear why, the meme “6 7” has taken the world by storm. The meme originated in late 2024 from a song called “Doot Doot” by Skrilla, in which the song repeats the phrase “6 7.” Since then, people have used the song in edits for basketball players such as Lamelo Ball, who is in fact 6 feet 7 inches tall. In early 2025, someone known as 67 kid was recorded doing a hand gesture and repeating the phrase 6 7 at a basketball game. For whatever reason, the meme skyrocketed in popularity and can now be seen in everyday interactions. The meme is typically used as a random interjection and has no actual meaning whatsoever. Its popularity has been a result of different famous figures and organizations using the meme. For example, a recent ad launched by the National Football League (NFL) using the song “Doot Doot” and showing several football players has circulated.
As a high school student, I’ve been heavily exposed to this meme through both the internet and other people at school. I’ve even used the phrase myself with friends, and while we all have a good laugh, sometimes the meme can also be irritating. When I initially heard the meme at a cross country practice, I had no clue what in the world it meant when someone randomly interjected, “6 7.” Now, I tend to see people make references to it every time the number 6 or 7 is brought up in a conversation. The meme has gotten to the point where when I use the number 6 or 7 when talking to people, I immediately have to tell them not to say the meme because people tend to jump on every chance they get to use it. I’ve grown used to the phrase, but I’ve witnessed plenty of people lose their minds over it. Fellow student journalist Rose Otto briefly shared her thoughts on the meme, remarking that, “I think it’s pretty stupid. It’s been going on long enough.” Teacher Mr. Martin commented, “It’s so random. Why not 3 4 or 5 6? It’s time for something new.”
Well, 6 7 seems to have more staying power than most memes. Who knows, it could be around for six or seven more years.
