The Naturals, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, is a thrilling mystery book about killers and paying attention to the smaller details. The book was originally published on November 5, 2013, by the Hachette Book Group. The book is the first one in a series of four and is very successful in the Young Adult space, with over 1 million copies sold. The Naturals is about a young girl named Cassie with the unique ability to read and profile people based on their appearance and mannerisms. One day, Cassie is given the business card of an FBI agent who wants to recruit her and other people of similar talents, called “naturals,” into a program with the goal to solve cold cases. Cassie joins to find a place she belongs and to hopefully find out more about her mother’s murder (the killer was never caught). While this is happening, however, another killer is on the loose and has their eyes set on the program. The book is a brilliant mix of suspense and teenage antics that leaves you wanting more every time you turn the page. Additionally, it has a wonderful message about finding where you belong in the world and the way childhood trauma can still affect us, even years later. Overall, The Naturals is a great book that will leave you on the edge of your seat throughout your time reading it. If you like murder mysteries, thrillers, teenage romance, and found family, consider giving this book a try. Who knows, you might want to read the rest of the series while you’re at it.
