You know the story of Dorothy and her companion Toto, but do you know the story of the Wicked Witch? This movie follows themes of misjudgment, prejudice, friendship, identity, love, and the most obvious, good vs. evil. Wicked dives into the backstory of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba Throp. Elphaba is judged by everyone because her skin color is green. When you look past Ms. Throp’s appearance, you will be met with a smart, gentle, and powerful lady. On the other hand, we have Elphaba’s roommate, Glinda. Glinda is quite literally the opposite of Elphaba. She is popular, rich, and very privileged. Throughout the movie, the two create a bond like no other.
The first screen-adaptation of the Broadway musical was released on November 22, 2024. This hit movie stars Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda). In just the opening week, Wicked made $163 million globally, which is the biggest opening for a Broadway adaptation ever. This movie won Best Film and Best Director at the National Board of Review. At the Golden Globes, it won the Cinematic & Box Office Achievement Award, Best Motion Picture, Best Comedy, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande). It won many, many awards, and that is just from two ceremonies.
If you are looking to watch this amazing movie in theaters, be sure to watch Part 1 first. Part 1 is up until the intermission of the Broadway production. Part 2 is scenes and songs from then on. Wicked Part 1 is available on many streaming platforms for rent, buy, and, depending on the platform, for free. Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters on November 22.
Make sure you grab some popcorn, your favorite green and pink pajamas, the Elphaba to your Glinda, and let Cynthia and Ariana remind you that some friendships – and some songs – stay with you for good.
