In our school office, you’ll find two staff members who help manage the affairs of 350+ students and 30+ teachers. Somehow, some way, our school secretaries, Mrs. Craig and Mrs. Kearfott, keep us all organized. I sat down with these ladies to learn more about their work.
Mrs. Kearfott, who just started a month ago, handles attendance, the announcements, and substitutes. Lately, she’s been working on end-of-year projects, including graduation, senior awards, national honor society, and other recognitions. Meanwhile, Mrs. Craig, who has been working at EPG for three years, handles athletic department tasks, helping with scheduling and confirming officials. She ensures athletes are cleared to play, compiles the weekly eligibility reports, and monitors any athletic restrictions.
Although it’s a busy job, they both enjoy it. Says Mrs. Craig, “I love doing a lot of different things at once, multitasking. You never know what the day is going to bring for good or for worse.” Mrs. Kearfott stated something similar: “I like the unknown of each day. Everything can change hour to hour, minute to minute.” Before working at the high school, both ladies worked in the corporate world. Mrs. Kearfott explained, “Balancing my career and family is easier now than in my corporate life. I was always here for sporting events anyway, so I might as well work here too.” Mrs. Craig added, “I decided to choose coming here because, for one, I love the district, and my kids are enrolled here. I think EPG is great. Secondly, it just gives me a lot more work-life balance than what I had before.”
How can students make our secretaries’ lives easier? “Come down when we call you to the office,” said Mrs. Craig. “Just because we’re calling over the intercom doesn’t mean you’re in trouble. Sometimes it’s as simple as a pass, or maybe you need to go to the guidance office.” Mrs. Kearfott added, “Come to school on time every day so I don’t have to deal with your attendance.” Next time you’re in the office, make sure to thank these ladies for all they do to keep EPGHS running smoothly.
